Killylifferbane - facts

In the Roman Catholic and Anglican church traditions, a glebe was an area of land belonging to a benefice. This was property (in addition to the parsonage house and grounds) which vested in the incumbent by right of his incumbency.Glebe included a wide variety of properties including farms, individual fields, houses, factories. An incumbent was entitled to retain the glebe for his own use if he wished (for instance, some incumbents farmed their own land) or he could let it and any income formed part of the stipend.

4. THOMAS4 ROONEY (JOHN3, PATRICK2, ALICE1 UNKNOWN) was born 18 Jan 1912 in killylifferbane. He married AGNES MANGELA MCNELIS 07 Jun 1942. She was born 23 Sep 1914.

Notes for THOMAS ROONEY:
Thomas and his siblings had a very tough upbringing. Days before Thomas's birth his father John passed away, his mother Mary died when he was three years old.

When the mother died all 4 of the children went to live with her mother, grandmother McGuire, they stayed with her for a while and then moved to live with their uncle Patrick mcGuire in castleblaney, they stayed for a couple of years, and then moved back eith thier grandmother.

At the age of five Thomas was sent to a Mrs Bridget Beggan of Aghaw, she was a widow with two sons called luke and Joe..

Thomas attended school at Magherowney and then Corranney, he left school and then was hired out to a farmer by the name of george presur for a year, soon after he left for Scotland and joined the queens own cameron highlanders, after 2 years and seeing the state of troops returning from overseas dutys, he deserted and returned home to Ireland as an AWOL fugitive.

He then joined the irish free state army as a place to hide, while in the army he beacame both a boxing and a gymnastic champion, winning irish medals in both events.
