If your planning a visit to Roslea and you like your local history, then a visit to the Heritage centre is a must !

The centre is housed in the old St Tierneys school and dates back from 1874 .

Among traditional farming implements on display is the McMahon spade , once manufactured locally, also on view is an old traditional irish fireplace, there is a famine exhibition and tons of historical records and photo's relating to Roslea and its history.

I was amazed to find amongst the hundreds of photos on display, old pictures of my ancestors, i'm sure that if your ancestors came from Roslea, the heritage centre will have some information on them.

The centre was run by two very Knowledgeable men called Oliver McCaffrey and Jimmy Callaghan, very friendly and when it comes to the history of Roslea, they are the people to ask ! they really do know their stuff !

For the past year or so the Heritage centre has been closed due to lack of funding and visits are normally made by way of an appointment.

However things may soon be changing as the centre i believe has been given lottery funding and is to do an exhibition on 'life in a border town' in the near future.

Books

The Centre has published four amazing books, I have copies in my possession and have taken notes from some of these while building this web site, sadly the books are out of print, but my hope is that if enough people show an interest and make enquiries about the purchase of these great reads, demand may encourage the books to be reprinted.

Titles of these books are The Roslea Historical Journal 1 to 4 , these journals a cram packed full of information, interviews with old residents, photos, records, historical data, a must for anyone with an interest in Roslea history.

And a really great book 'Roslea Remembers'

When making this book all the residents of the village were asked to send to the centre all their old photos, these where then made into this book which is a an absolute goldmine for people who have an interest in their Roslea ancestry, the book also contains old school class photos, its a book I find myself picking up again and again !

As soon as I hear anything about the possible permanent reopening of the centre i will post details on this page, in the meantime people wishing to visit should write to the address above and make an appointment to visit.
