The 'Cooper' Rooneys

The Cooper Rooneys got thier nickname because they were excellent at the art of Coopering.

Hugh Rooney learnt his trade from Patrick Smyth of Mullaghbrady.

Patrick was one of the Roslea martyrs who was executed in 1797.

Because of his association with Patrick, Hugh left Roslea for a while in fear of his life. He returned years later and lived at Crokada. Click here to read the story.

A well known descendant of Hugh 'cooper' Rooney, was his son 'Master Hugh Rooney'.

Master Hugh can be seen in the above picture with his wife Emily McGuire. Hugh was a national school teacher from 1880-1945.

At the ripe old age of 88, Hugh wrote his memoirs, hoping they would be of interest to his children and grandchildren.

One of his Grandchildren , Brendan has given me permission to share his memoirs on my website. Another of his grandchildren, Patricia has very kindly sent me the above photographs.
